Val Grande National Park
Unspoiled and alluring, the Val Grande National Park is a large area of wilderness extending from the Vigezzo Valley down to Lake Maggiore. With its dense woodland and abundant plant and animal life, it is now the largest wilderness area in Europe. A magnet for climbers and hikers, Val Grande has several access points, of which the one starting from Malesco is regarded as the easiest and shortest.
From here routes of different levels of difficulty allow hikers to explore the valley, now gradually but inexorably being reclaimed by nature, though once inhabited. The signs of human settlement are still there, in the shape of rock engravings, abandoned baite (the simple stone houses typical of this mountain area), tracks carved out of the rock for driving flocks of animals, and terraces.
The area is now protected by a Park Authority, which runs a number of Visitor Centres with information about all aspects of the Val Grande.
