Centovalli
The romantic beauty of the Vigezzo Valley continues through enchanting scenery into Swiss territory with the Centovalli and the Terre di Pedemonte, an area of lush woodland starting at the Swiss-Italian border. The picturesque Centovalli (“Hundred valleys”) owes its name to the many lateral valleys which break up the mountainsides of the main valley.
Wild and atmospheric, the Centovalli repays exploration, with its beech woods, its mountain streams and the spectacular bridges that cross them. Well worthwhile is a trip through this marvellous landscape by train, on the Centovalli railway line. Familiarly known as the “Vigezzina” in Italy and the “Centovallina” in Switzerland, the train service links the towns of Locarno and Domodossola. The route gives an excellent view of the extensive woodlands and steep slopes, crossed by the railway line thanks to a succession of spectacular iron or stone viaducts.
You can walk from the Hotel Miramonti to Santa Maria Maggiore station for a train ride to the Centovalli.
